    Drive-In Rack in Pittsburgh, PA

Drive-in rack removes aisles from the equation entirely. The forklift drives inside the structure and sets pallets on continuous rails, which reduces the number of access aisles compared with selective rack. The cost is access: only the pallets at the open end of the lane are reachable until you work through the ones in front.

That makes it the right call for large volumes of a small number of SKUs - bulk buffer stock, seasonal inventory, freezer product - and the wrong call the moment SKU variety climbs. Drive-in loads and unloads from one end for LIFO; drive-through is open at both ends for FIFO, at the cost of a few positions and a second access aisle.

We lay out drive-in around your specific lift truck's dimensions and your SKU depth, then put the position count next to a selective plan of the same footprint so the density gain is a number, not a sales claim.

    How Drive-In Rack Works

    1

    Continuous rails, not beams

Pallets rest on rails carried by upright frames rather than individual beam levels, so a lane accepts pallet after pallet at the same elevation.

    2

    The truck enters the lane

The driver travels inside the bay to place or retrieve each load. Lane width, rail height, and mast clearance get dimensioned to that specific truck, not a generic one.

    3

    One open end or two

One open end gives LIFO and dense bulk storage. Two open ends give FIFO with slightly fewer positions, since each lane now needs clearance from both sides.

    4

    Guarding built into the design

Guide rails, column guards, and rail-end protection are part of the spec from the start, because a lane that takes daily contact from forklifts is a lane that will eventually take damage.

    Where It Fits Best

High volume of a small number of SKUs
Seasonal or buffer inventory held in bulk
Cold storage and freezer rooms where cube matters most
Product too fragile to floor-stack more than two high
Buildings where floor space, not height, is the binding constraint

What We Need to Design It

    • What forklift will enter the lanes, and what are its exact dimensions?
    • How many pallets do you hold per SKU?
    • Do you need LIFO, or does the product require drive-through FIFO?
    • What's the clear height and floor condition in the storage area?
    • How many total pallet positions are you trying to reach?

Why Pittsburgh Warehouses Work With Us

Pittsburgh storage projects need to account for the actual building before comparing rack prices. Riverfront properties in the Strip District and Lawrenceville can have different receiving access from a suburban facility near I-79 or the Parkway East. We review your columns, usable height, forklift paths, and loading doors with the drive-in rack specification, rather than assuming a drawing from another property will fit.

As a division of Warehouse Equipment & Supplies Co., we begin with a Free Design Consultation and explain the tradeoff between access, storage capacity, and the way your inventory moves. You can review the proposed plan and ask about an alternative before committing to material. For drive-in rack, that means discussing aisles traded for lanes to push positions per square foot alongside the constraints that your operators deal with each shift.

The quote identifies the agreed material and work, and we coordinate delivery and installation questions with your receiving contact. Our team handles the permit side for you. A clear scope and a usable layout matter more than promising a catalog maximum that does not work on your floor.

    What a Project Includes

The design starts with the forklift, not the rack. Mast height, overall width, load backrest, and turning clearance decide lane dimensions, so truck specifications get collected before anything is drawn.

Next we look at SKU depth. Drive-in rewards deep lanes of a single product and punishes variety - if a lane never fills, you've built an expensive way to store less than you could have with selective. Where the inventory profile is mixed, we'll usually recommend a hybrid: selective at the pick face, drive-in behind it for reserve.

The quote itemizes frames, rails, rail supports, guide rails, and column protection, with a CAD drawing showing lane depth, rail elevations, and total positions. Installation partners anchor, plumb, and align every rail run, then verify a loaded pallet travels the full lane before handing the system over.

Because drive-in lanes take contact from lift trucks over time, we can supply replacement rails and guards if a lane takes damage down the road.

Before the Pittsburgh installation is scheduled, confirm the complete configuration against the manufacturer documentation. Review anchoring, bracing, load signage, and protection around lift truck travel. Your receiving team should know how material will be unloaded and where installation work is isolated from active operations. At handover, check the finished layout, capacity information, and operating instructions before storing inventory; later changes to beam or arm levels need another capacity review rather than a guess based on the original drawing.
