Pallet Flow Rack system in an industrial warehouse

Pallet Flow Rack in Pittsburgh, PA

Pallet flow rack solves a problem no other system does cleanly: proving first in, first out instead of hoping the crew rotates stock correctly. Pallets load at the high end of a lane and travel down gravity rollers or wheel tracks, braked to a controlled pace, so the oldest pallet is always the one presented at the pick face.

Choose it when dates, lots, or shelf life aren't negotiable, or when a handful of high-turn SKUs eat a disproportionate share of your building. Lanes commonly run five to twenty pallets deep, so a few pick faces represent a large amount of stored product - which is also why it costs more per position than selective or pushback and needs two aisles instead of one.

We lay out flow lanes around your throughput, pallet condition, and ceiling height, then price it position by position against the alternatives.

    How Pallet Flow Rack Works

    1

    Load end

Pallets enter at the high end of the lane. Each new pallet stages behind the one before it, so put-away is a single move made from the load-side aisle.

    2

    Gravity conveyor

Full-width rollers or skate-wheel tracks, set on a pitch calculated for the pallet weight, carry loads forward under control rather than free rolling.

    3

    Braking and separation

Brake rollers and pallet separators regulate travel and stop pallets from bunching, protecting both the product and the structure underneath it.

    4

    Pick end

Pickers work a face of first-in pallets. Pull one and the next indexes forward automatically, so the pick aisle stays organized without anyone re-facing stock.

    Where It Fits Best

Date-coded food, beverage, and pharmaceutical inventory
High-volume SKUs with steady, predictable turns
Cold storage where every cubic foot carries a cost
Staging finished goods coming off a production line
Operations that need FIFO documented, not just assumed

What We Need to Design It

    • Do you need strict pallet-level FIFO, or is lane-level rotation enough?
    • How many pallets per SKU move through in a typical week?
    • What's the pallet weight range, and what condition are pallets usually in?
    • How deep can lanes run in your footprint?
    • Is the storage area ambient, cooler, or freezer?

Why Pittsburgh Warehouses Work With Us

Pittsburgh storage projects need to account for the actual building before comparing rack prices. Riverfront properties in the Strip District and Lawrenceville can have different receiving access from a suburban facility near I-79 or the Parkway East. We review your columns, usable height, forklift paths, and loading doors with the pallet flow rack specification, rather than assuming a drawing from another property will fit.

As a division of Warehouse Equipment & Supplies Co., we begin with a Free Design Consultation and explain the tradeoff between access, storage capacity, and the way your inventory moves. You can review the proposed plan and ask about an alternative before committing to material. For pallet flow rack, that means discussing gravity lanes loaded on one side and picked on the other alongside the constraints that your operators deal with each shift.

The quote identifies the agreed material and work, and we coordinate delivery and installation questions with your receiving contact. Our team handles the permit side for you. A clear scope and a usable layout matter more than promising a catalog maximum that does not work on your floor.

    What a Project Includes

Flow racking is engineered per lane, not pulled off a shelf. Pallet weight, deck condition, bottom-board orientation, and desired lane depth all drive the roller or wheel selection and the pitch calculation, so the first step is pinning down exactly what's moving through the lane.

From there we set lane count and depth against your throughput. Fewer, deeper lanes maximize storage; more, shallower lanes give the pick face more SKU variety. Both versions get modeled with position counts so the tradeoff is visible before you buy, not found after.

The itemized quote covers frames, beams, rail and roller assemblies, brakes, entry and exit guides, and guarding. At installation the crew sets pitch, tests loaded travel in every lane, and tunes brakes before the system goes live.

Afterward you have documented capacities, a lane map your team can hand to new hires, and a local contact for brake rollers and wheels as the system racks up cycles.

Before the Pittsburgh installation is scheduled, confirm the complete configuration against the manufacturer documentation. Review anchoring, bracing, load signage, and protection around lift truck travel. Your receiving team should know how material will be unloaded and where installation work is isolated from active operations. At handover, check the finished layout, capacity information, and operating instructions before storing inventory; later changes to beam or arm levels need another capacity review rather than a guess based on the original drawing.
